YESTERDAY'S RAIN
yesterday's rain is here for awhile:
is she the Mississippi or the River Nile
through forests that used to thrive
for the pages in the books of your lost archive?
so many things that life can contain
inside the sound of yesterday's rain
can't you hear her call
in yesterday's rain-
fall:
oracles are stones falling from your mouth
(whose words belong to only me)
in the shape of clouds moving cross the South
(they're going someplace just to be)
silver sheets of lightening make it clear
(exploding everything we see)
showing us the origins we share
(in the atmosphere...where
on the strangest circuit she seems to run
like the broken wheel of a second sun
whose orbits start to close
on some world that's a ruse and sometimes a rose
so many things that life can contain
inside the sound of yesterday's rain
it fades away slow
like yesterday's rain-
bow
it fades away slow
into rivers that flow
into the Gulf of Mexico
yesterday's rain
where's it going?
is it all gone
