The Swimming Pool Q’s The Deep End-DB Records
by Bill Perry
This year has been a busy one for the Atlanta-based band The Swimming Pool Q’s, performing shows in Atlanta, working on a new album (coming soon) and reissuing their first album The Deep End. The album has been remastered and additional songs have been added, making this a must own for both new and old fans.
Humor, excellent musicianship, Jeff Calder’s wit, Anne Richmond Boston powerful voice, Bob Elsey’s Hendrix/Husker Du guitar; all added up to help make The Deep End an 80s masterpiece. With this album, the Swimming Pool Q’s helped usher in so many genres, from the bubba/trailer-trash rock of bands like Southern Culture on the Skids (check out the funny “Stock Car Sin”) to the thought provoking poetic approach favored by REM (listen to “The A-Bomb Woke Me Up”). This album should be considered a gem of historical importance by any rock music fan.
Other things that make this album attractive are the extensive liner notes detailing the history of the band and the scene in the South during the early 80s. Add to it 12 extra songs and you’ve got a hefty load of goods for your buck.
